Perched on the banks of the Taw-Torridge Estuary in Appledore, the Beaver Inn is over 400 years old, steeped in local history and surrounded by old multicoloured cottages.
The Pub
This small, traditional pub sits on the banks of the estuary, has a good selection of beer and locally-sourced grub. The pub is carpeted, with a long live-edge bar counter at the back and a mix of barrel tables and normal table seating. It has a function room at one end and an elevated dining platform overlooking the estuary at the other.
Backdrop
The pub’s, North-East-facing patio overlooks a tidal estuary where the river Torridge meets both the river Taw and the sea. You can clearly see Crow Point in the distance while closer to the shore, little fishing boats are dotted along the coastline. After a long winter, sitting out with my pint on a sunny day was a memorable experience. If you visit when the weather is less favourable, there is estuary-facing seating inside!
The only slight issue with the backdrop is the orientation – as a North-East facing pub, the sun can dip early (especially in the winter months) so sunset views are off the cards and the patio can be in shadow during the afternoon. Backdrop score: 3.5/5
Seating
On the day we visited, the pub had 7 four-seater tables out on the small patio terrace overlooking the estuary. As mentioned above, the patio is shaded and the some of the wall section is quite high so the estuary cannot be seen while seated (which impacts the score). On the upside, the indoor dining room can probably seat 15-20 people and the views through the window over the estuary are lovely. Seating score: 2.5/5
Atmosphere
The pub had a great mix of locals and tourists. The staff were friendly – we felt welcome and relaxed throughout our visit. Can’t mark it down: 5/5
