Restaurant Le Panoramique Mer de Glace – Chamonix, France

Enjoy a spectacular panoramic view of the Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and the Grands Jorasses from the Restaurant Le Panoramique.

The Pub / Venue

Perched at the far end of Chamonix’s famous rack-and-pinion railway, this restaurant offers seating inside as well as outdoors at a whopping 1,913 m. The modern restaurant has large panoramic windows along one side and a huge semi-circular terrace which is open in the summer. The restaurant serves regional food, wine and of course, draught beer.

Backdrop

The backdrop is absolutely stunning. The terrace offers a front row seat overlooking the Mer de Glace glacier, the Drus and the Grands Jorasses. In terms of mountain views, this is really hard to beat. The views are completely unencumbered and you are graced with both the glacier and striking peaks (my fav is the Aiguille du Dru – Aiguille is French for ‘needle’). One of the most memorable aspects of the whole experience was learning about how far the glacier has receded. In 1988, it took 3 steps to get down to the famous ice cave, it now takes over 430.

Seating

There’s plenty of seating with prime views. When busy, the restaurant reserves the best seats for those eating. With only a small budget, Katy and I persuaded them to let us sit on the edge if we ordered one french onion soup between us. Mission accomplished. Seating score: 5/5.

Atmosphere

As a fairly high-end restaurant, the atmosphere isn’t comparable to your local boozer or beach bar. Its quiet atmosphere is perfect for the backdrop. Lost in thought, pint in hand, this place was as good if not better than the Askla viewpoint in Norway. It will take some beating! 4/5.
